Starfighter was one of the most dramatic looking aircraft of its
day. It was often called "the missile with a man in it"
because of its needle-like fuselage and high speed. The F-104
went into service amidst a flood of publicity and it achieved
many speed and altitude records. Consequently, the F-104
Starfighter was a very popular plastic model kit subject during
the late 1950s and early 1960s. By the time Gerry and Sylvia
Anderson's Thunderbirds went into production in 1964, many
different plastic model kits of the Starfighter were on the
market in a variety of "fit the box" sizes.
For years, fans of Thunderbirds speculated on what was the tracked toy which was the source for so many of the pod vehicles. Finally, after over 30 years, the secret has been revealed. TV21 is proud to present the full text of the article about the "Vickers Vigor" toy tractor that originally appeared in the May 1999 issue of the UK magazine "Toy Collector". Malcolm was kind enough to provide the text of the article as well as the photos of the toy you see here.
