UK – Day 8: Darsham Boys

So today I went to Suffolk. Specifically, my mission was to get to Thorington in Suffolk. You can google it, but basically it is far far north and east of London. Where did I start this journey? Far, far south and west of London in Rustington.

So, I got my ticket and took a train to Victoria  and then had to figure out the rest. It basically involved taking a tube train to Liverpool Street station and then when i got there, I had to get the second of three trains. As I was not getting the train to my destination, I had to ask. I got the info I needed, but I did feel a lot like I was on a quest and I felt like I was failing as I had to ask for help. However, the train system in the UK is outstanding and excellent as you never have to wait long for the next train.

I had just enough time to get a cornish pasty (a meat and potato filled pasty from Cornwall) and a drink before I got the second train. Destination: Ipswich. After a long ride, I got off in Ipswich and changed to another train which left in 3 minutes. Its like magic, or clockwork, but it was impressive. Another while passed and sadly, the sun went down before I arrived at Darsham.

My friend Simon and his wife met me at the station as the train pulled away. I wish I could say the whistle blew and white smoke chuffed off as the train left the station, but that would be false, as it was a diesel train. Not a Harry Potter movie, but it did feel a bit like that. Total journey time: five hours. Five. Hours. But worth it!

We went for a ride into the popular and expensive town of Southwold. It is on the sea and popular with the wealthy. Sadly, Southwold was hit by bad flooding about 10 days ago. The first place we went for dinner was the Harbour Inn, but it was not really doing much as the fryer was broken. No fish and chips from there! 🙁 Next we went to the Southwold pier where I had a very good fish and chips.

After dinner, we finally went back to the house. Simon and his wife live in a huge house on about 30 acres of land. It is quite large inside. For several hours we reminisced and watched an old video we made in 1987. Yes, that old. Good times.
